the poor gardener

I just went out the water my little garden - the air is hot. Our Julys are not usually like this. Anyway, I went out there and saw that somebody ate the tops of my two bean plants and much of my curly parsley. The rabbits, I suppose; there are many of them.

I am a poor gardener, but I'll keep going, because I like the experience of gardening, and learning how to grow things. I hope they don't eat all my plants!

  1. Before I was married I volunteered in a kindergarten classroom, where the children were taught a version of the song, "John the Rabbit." Do you know it? The teacher I worked with included a few more vegetables than the versions I can find on YouTube -- maybe hers was the California version.

For years afterward I used to sing it, and taught it, sort of, to my children, though rabbits were not usually a problem for us. I hope you don't make the resolution that the farmer in the song makes!

    1. No, I have never heard that song! I didn't hear a resolution, Gretchen - it just said "if I live". I was expecting some violence to the rabbit. But it's a cute song.

  2. The resolution seems to be, "If I live to see next fall, I won't plant a garden at all." Defeat! :-(

But one lone version said, "I won't *have* a garden at all..." which made me wonder if the rabbit had eaten it all up.

  3. I am sorry you have had damage to your plants, Lisa. We have found that once rabbits, deer, birds etc. have discovered our fruit and vegetables they keep coming back to finish them off unless we make a more secure barrier around the plants. They think you have grown them specially for them!

    1. Well, we'll see if that happens! :D I went out again this morning and I've still got some parsley, so they just decimated the beans. The onions are still growing and the sage and the butternut squash plant is taking over the whole bed!
