the lazy way to ripen tomatoes

Not that I'm an expert on tomatoes, but I think it must be an old wives' tale that in order to ripen a green tomato, you need to wrap it up in newspaper and keep it in the dark. Not so!

When did I pick these? Two or three weeks ago, and every now and then I look inside the bag to see if any are getting the slightest bit pink. Then I put them on the windowsill where they finish turning red.

  1. I've ripened green tomatoes in the garage many times, but never wrapped up or even covered. I just put them on newspaper or in a shallow cardboard box.

    1. It's funny, how these practices get started.

  2. You could put a banana in with them. That is supposed to work quite well. I've not tried this myself, I hasten to add! :)

    1. A banana - well, they don't seem to need any help at the moment, but I'll keep it in mind, since my brother often has bananas around!

  3. I've heard the newspaper thing, but not the dark thing. And really, don't they ripen in the light out in the garden?!? Make a person wonder ...how interesting folklore advice can be! Sometimes it is so spot on and other a noodle scratcher!

We keep ours in a box with no lid because it if it outta sight we tend toward outta mind and then we have mushy tomatoes. ;)

Hooray for bags (and boxes) of tomatoes!

  4. Everyone has their way, indeed! I was taught to put them in a carboard box in the basement and they'd be good by (or until?) Christmas. Glad you got yours sooner, Lisa!
