So far, the winter hasn't been exactly run-of-the-mill. Much colder at times than usual, and the snowfalls - we've had several small to moderate snowfalls - they last a week or maybe just a couple of days, then melt. A few days later, snow again. For those of you who don't have snowy winters, I can say that this pattern is very nice, because it never stays around long enough to turn black from exhaust fumes, so the romance you get from freshly fallen snow remains - until the melting. How nice.
This picture is not from today, but it doesn't matter - it snowed today, too. Ice was also predicted, and the library closed early. We are all snug inside, thankfully.
that is really nice! :)
ReplyDeleteBliss! xx
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the land of winter-lasting-six-solid-months. I've made my home in a land of intermittent winter like you describe--snowy for a while, it melts, snowy for a while, it melts. I can even cycle still off and on most winters. I don't know that I've seen snow turn black with exhaust though...and I think I am glad about that! Wow. It is so beautiful when pristine! I adore it when the each branch is outlined with a nice coat of white--like the ones outside your window. Such beauty.
ReplyDeleteOh, wow - you've never seen the black snow? It's what we always get: a big snowfall, big piles of it from the plows, cold temps so little or no melting, and the exhaust making black edges of snow along the roads.
DeleteHmmmmmm....now I wonder if I've just missed it or if its because we're a very small city (pop. 100,000) so maybe there is less exhaust? Curious. I'll have to ask around.
DeleteOh, no Beth - the town I live in has less than twelve thousand.
DeleteWell, I'll be jiggered.
DeleteThat sounds like an ideal winter! We used to get snow that hung around and got black - especially when I lived and worked in London. Our snow doesn't last a day now.
