plum dress with linen sleeves

I had started on another dress like this - scoop-neck, a-line - then I a-lined it more, and after two interruptions where I had to drop it to work on something else, I'm  back to it now and getting near the end.

From fabric I had on hand, but not enough for the sleeves, so I used some lightweight linen in a matching color. Then I thought to embroider a running stitch with the same plum shade. The stitching echoes the "dashes" on the fabric, I think.

Then I decided to do another row.

My embroidery skills are rudimentary, but I won't let that stop me.  Now I just have to figure out the hem. A linen ruffle peeking out?

  3. Thank you, ladies! I am just making a linen ruffle of sorts at the hem. It isn't quite what I had in mind, but it'll do. I've been working on this too long; and now it's too cold to wear it!

  4. The needlework is a perfect touch to tie it all together. Good work. I second Elizabeth. I'd like the see the whole thing in all its final glory. I've got a date tonight with my friend, Hannah, for a little sewing lesson. She's recently been gifted a sewing machine, but is at a loss to start. I am not sure I am qualified to give sewing lessons, but tonight we're going to go over some mending techniques and, if there is time, skirt making.

    1. Glory, I don't know! I've got a ruffle of sorts basted on the hem now. It really doesn't matter whether you're "officially" qualified for teaching - you just have to know more than your pupil, and be willing to share what you know! Good luck!

  5. oh how pretty! I've found that kind of simple embroidery to really enhance a garment and not tax my limited embroidery skills at all. Love how your limits with fabric forced you to be creative :)

    1. Thank you, Margo. And I assure you, I am forcing myself to allow myself to be forced! :D
