to be content

"I am still determined to be cheerful and to be happy in whatever situation I may be, for I have also learnt from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances; we carry the seeds of the one, or the other about with us, in our minds, wherever we go."

                                          -  from Martha Washington, an American Life, by Patricia Brady

"If today is so horrendous can't find one moment to enjoy, one simple pleasure to savor, one friend to call, one person to love, one thing to share, one smile to offer; if life is so difficult you don't want to bother living it to the fullest, then don't live today for yourself."

                                             -  from Simple Abundance, by Sarah Ban Breathnach

"...I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content. I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want. I can do all things in Him who strengthens me."

                                                -  St. Paul

  1. I sometimes find it hard to be cheerful as Martha says, especially when going through difficult times. But I do think that I am content, as St. Paul says, even though I may not be cheerful about the difficult circumstances.

    1. I'm with you, Anne. As long as we accept it, and try to be content, that's the main thing. Being cheerful isn't so easy. But I like to be reminded to try! :)
