I think cats have a deep sense of where they are welcome. There is a house on my daughter's paper route that leaves out food and water in their garage--a cat friendly place--,and a whole cat club hangs out there. Do you know the children's book, Jenny and the Cat Club, by Esther Averill? It was one of my daughter's favorites when she was little, and now she has a an all black cat like Jenny.
