homemade breadsticks

When my cold was waning I had such a desire for a crunchy cracker or chip, and searched my cookbooks for recipes. But the bread sticks in Alana Chernila's Homemade Pantry are what caught my attention.

I made them yesterday. While it's very satisfying to eat them, it was a lot of work for just thirty two, which take no time at all to disappear. Rolling these little things between your hands wasn't as fast as you might expect - yeast dough isn't so biddable as Play-Doh.  And, unless I put in more salt than I should have (don't think so), they are quite salty. Still, I can't help thinking that if I could do it in stages it might be worth it to try again. We'll see. I'm enjoying them while they last - yesterday with hummus, today with peanut butter.

  1. Oh, how I adore bread.....any sort of bread. And it never lasts long. I used to hand roll my breadsticks, but now I just roll out a big sheet of dough with my rolling pin (like I am making a pizza crust) and cut them into breadstick size pieces with a pizza cutter. They're not usually as soft as the fatter, fluffier hand rolled variety, but its faster! And anything that gets bread into my mouth faster works for me.... :) I'm glad you're feeling better and feeding yourself well in the process. Rest, hot tea, and nourishing food. That is my best medicine.

    1. Well, aren't you smart! I may do this someday - and I'll have you to thank! :)

    2. I am not sure if its smarts or laziness. Probably both, but hey as long as we're making our own bread I think a little laziness is okay. :)
